Review | Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

Title: Beautiful Creatures
Author: Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Pages: 576
Rating: 5/5

"There were no surprises in Gatlin County.
We were pretty much the epicenter of the middle of nowhere.
At least, that's what I thought.
Turns out, I couldn't have been more wrong.
There was a curse.
There was a girl.
And in the end, there was a grave.

Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them. In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything."

My thoughts:

Beautiful Creatures was a southern Gothic that is beyond amazing. It has the love, the mystery, the family secrets, it has everything.

The characters are amazing and relatable. They weren’t flat and cliché, they were well rounded (beyond it) and completely alive in a literal sense. It was like a town filled with a rich history, and you could really think everything was real. From each of their families, to everyone in the town, each and every one of them were awesome and popped off the pages. Ethan and Lena were my favorites, along with Boo Radley :].

Speaking of that town! It was creepy, yet was really interesting and played a deeper part of the story than you would originally think. The authors created that perfectly, and I really like it. Did I mention the writing is plain out amazing? The descriptions of everything lifted off the pages. When you first read the opening page, you’re instantly pulled into the dark history of Gaitlin, the feelings of Ethan about Lena, the Southern flare, everything was amazing. To me, the length of this book is perfect for the story that’s being told. I cannot wait for the second book!

Since this, by far, is my favorite southern Gothic novel and this review sucks and is starting to sound fangirly, we’ll just go that this book is amazing and you should seriously pick it up, no matter what you have heard about it. Which are so good reviews from what I see. You’ll fall in love with the town and the characters and the amazing story just like us who loved it!
