Review: Jumping Off Swings by Jo Knowles

Title: Jumping Off Swings
Author: Jo Knowles

Rating: 4.5/5

One pregnancy. Four friends. It all adds up to a profound time of change in this poignant, sensitively written YA novel.

Ellie remembers how the boys kissed her. Touched her. How they
begged for more. And when she gave it to them, she felt loved. For a
while anyway. So when Josh, an eager virgin with a troubled home life, leads her from a party to the backseat of his van, Ellie follows. But their "one-time thing" is far from perfect: Ellie gets pregnant. Josh reacts with shame and heartbreak, while their confidantes, Caleb and Corinne, deal with their own complex swirl of emotions. No matter what Ellie chooses, all four teenagers will be forced to grow up a little faster as a result. Told alternately from each character’s point of view, this deeply insightful novel explores the aftershocks of the biggest decision of one fragile girl’s life — and the realities of leaving innocence behind.

My review:

This is your typical teen pregnancy book, but in ways more than one, it's totally different in a good way. Told by Ellie, Josh- the father, Caleb, and Corrine the views change. And with that, you got to see how the pregnancy actually effected the people around her. I found Josh's a tad heartbreaking; you can see the struggle that he actually wants to keep it but knows he has no choice and can't. I'm sure I got choked towards the end of his view, but didn't cry. The plot was fast paced. She was pregnat one chapter, then five or six chapters later she has the kid. Too fast, but that's my only negeative with this book. Overall this is a great, heartbreaking, and just normal. Does that make sense?

Review: Hate List by Jennifer Brown

Title: Hate List

Rating 5/5

Five months ago, Valerie Leftman's boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on their school cafeteria. Shot trying to stop him, Valerie inadvertently saved the life of a classmate, but was implicated in the shootings because of the list she helped create. A list of people and things she and Nick hated. The list he used to pick his targets.

Now, after a summer of seclusion, Val is forced to confront her guilt as she returns to school to complete her senior year. Haunted by the memory of the boyfriend she still loves and navigating rocky relationships with her family, former friends and the girl whose life she saved, Val must come to grips with the tragedy that took place and her role in it, in order to make amends and move on with her life.

Review:

This book is heartbreaking. The flashbacks between what happened and what's happening now, add so much to the book. You feel yourself grieving with her, wanting her to stop blaming herself. The plot isn't dominant in this book, the characters are. I've never read anything like that before, where the characters are the main focus instead of the plot. I kind of like it. Although the main focus was Valerie, you got to see into the other students eyes and how
they felt about the whole thing. You wouldn't expect that in a novel, and I'm amazed that it was accomplished in this one. The ending had tears in my eyes it was so sad, yet a good way to forget yet remember. Overall this is a heartbreaking, emotional, strong novel about grieving and understanding how actions really do effect others.

Sunday's Vintage Darlings (1 Late)

Samira Armin Hodges in the fantastic author behind that book that is now my very favorite. If you want to check out her blog please click here. If you want to read my review of the book, it's right on this link [: Yes, it's the smiley face, hehe. In the meantime, here's a sypnopsis of her book:
_____________

"One day. That’s how long it took for fourteen year-old Faye Martin’s ordinary life to take a dramatic and unexpected turn. First, she gets struck by lightning. Second, Benjamin Parker, the object of her obsession, witnessed her near-death experience. Finally, her parents force her to leave her hometown of Seattle to attend a summer camp, aptly named ‘Camp Milestone’. Only, Camp Milestone is no ordinary camp. Before she knows it, Faye finds herself caught in a whirlwind of uncertainty, torture, calamine lotion and romance….All in the name of summer camp. But as the summer unfolds, she realizes there is much more to Camp Milestone than meets the eye. Will she be able to unravel the mystery that surrounds this unusual camp? And more importantly, will she be able to survive the madness long enough to put the pieces together?"

1- First off, I know you get asked this question a lot, but where did you get your inspiration for Milestones?

The story for Milestones just came to me one day. I can’t say there was one thing that happened that made me come up with it. I daydream a lot and I am always thinking up different stories but this one seemed more special than all the others so I knew I had to run with it. Then, later, as I was writing it, I drew inspiration from my own life experiences (like my own camp experience when I was younger etc….).

2- Did you ever want to be an author when you were younger or was it a spur of the moment decision?

Of course I did! I have loved writing all my life and I would have loved to be author when I was younger. The difference was, I just didn’t think it was possible! I wasn’t the “major in English and minor in arts” type of person. I was the science loving, doctor-wannabe girl who also happened to adore writing and loved coming up with new and crazy stories. I didn’t fit the stereotype. So I never thought it was possible.

3- Speaking of authors, what advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Oh so much! Where do I start? For one, don’t ever give up. The road to publishing is a long and at times tedious one, but you must stay determined and try not to become too demoralized. You will need to grow thicker skin and deal with rejection….a lot! Whenever I used to get rejected, I would seek reinforcement from my friends and family and I would also go and read about other authors’ publishing endeavours. It would make me feel so much better knowing that Stephen King was also rejected back in the day, as did other super successful authors. Also, don’t feel bad if you are very critical of your own work. I think it’s a trait all authors share. And finally try to deal with writer’s block by reading a book you love, one that will surely inspire you.

4- Who or what inspires you most when you write?

I have always been inspired by Judy Blume and then later, JK Rowling. I also get very easily inspired by movies (most often times romantic comedies or chick flick, believe it or not!). Also , my husband understands the writer in me very well and he has become an expert at determining when I need a boost or encouragement. So he inspires me quite often too. Finally, I get inspired by life. I lived in the Caribbean for two years, have moved many many times in my life and have had many amazing experiences which all inspire me as well.

5- When you saw your first book on the shelves, what was your first thought?

Something along the lines of, “Omg. I can’t believe this is happening! I can’t believe this is happening. I can’t believe this is happening. Omigod, this is amazing. I feel so lucky. And….ahhhh! I really hope people like it!”.

6- We all have random things about us. Can you give us five random facts about you?

I love this. Okay, here goes:

5- I love to watch The Office.
4- I love to travel. I have a list of top places I’d love to visit and my number one place is Greece.
3- My nickname is Sami. That’s actually what all my friends and family call me. Only my teachers and publisher call me Samira. ;)
2- I speak three languages.
1- I got married at the Atlantis Hotel in the Bahamas.

7- This out of curiosity but what’s the title of the next book of the Milestones Trilogy?

I would love to answer this question but I am sworn to secrecy! And since whole theme of Milestones is “Can you keep a secret?”, I’ve got to stick to my own motto. Unfortunately, that will be something that will be announced sometime in 2010.
Thank you so much for having me on your blog. It was a pleasure answering your questions! :))

My thoughts.

This heartbreaking, mysterious, even heartwarming, lovable book has me in it's reins. I didn't think that I'd like it, but I figured out, in the end, I love it. I feel I can't give it a review great enough for it because it's that good. I hope I didn't give you any spoilers because I wasn't allowed to. Here's teh review all:

Beth has as always been known as "The Beast." Even her father, who left, thought she was ugly. Getting teased and bothered at school, she's imprinted in her mind she will always be ugly. No matter what. Her choir girls gave her a makeover, yet she still thinks she's ugly. At first, I thought she was whiny. Always complaining about still being ugly. I'll be honest. But in the end I notice it added to the story I just couldn't find the reason. Scott was the person who stuck with Beth through it all, I liked his spunk. He was funny and caring all tied into one. He made me laugh quite a few times. Best for last, Derek. He's your mysterious, secretive guy. I fell in love with his character. Although I found he fell in love with Beth all to quickly, just for her voice. I still liked the guy, he was sweet, yet modest. Can guys be modest? But all of the characters added to the novel itself, I say this all the time, but it's quite true in this novel.

The theme behind this book is beautiful. Severely beautiful. It's that moral you always here over and over, Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover, and Morrison raised it to a whole new level. The writing was just fantastic, ever so often in the book you'll get lyrics that she writes. I feel that gave the book that certain oomph. Because of the writing, I found myself either swooning or laughing or grimacing and even crying. I'm completely honest with that last part.

Overall, if you're looking for a sweet but heartbreaking book, this is the way to go. It's more than what the description tells you. It's so much more. This book comes out March 2010, and when it does I recommend you read it!

Waiting on Wednesday [o8]

"Beth Michaels isn't sure when it all began, but she's pretty sure that the pink dots came first. Pink dots everywhere in her vision, clouding the people who stood before her. And then, little movie screens started to play, telling her more than she ever wanted know about their lives. Now, she can't even eat a hamburger without seeing how the poor cow met his maker. As she approaches her eighteenth birthday, her visions just keep getting worse. And when a little gold envelope shows up proclaiming the words YOU ARE MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE, she starts to do the super-freak. What does all of this mean? It means she's in for a long senior year."

Oh my gosh, isn't this cover beautiful? Eek, I love it! [: What are you eying this week?

Teaser Tuesday! [o8]

This week I'm reading two books. So that gives you two teasers, :P From what I read so far, they are really good. Look out for the reviews! And this week's Teaser isn't exactly a teaser. Hm, but for now, here are the rules for Teaser Tuesdays:

  • Grab your current read.
  • Let the book fall open to a random page.
  • Share with us two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page, somewhere between lines 7 and 12.
  • You also need to share the title of the book that you’re getting your “teaser” from … that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!

  • "As I head up the 401 in the deep cold of a black night, I try to stay calm, but the border guy undid me. Tears attack. Burn my eyes and stupid face. It starts to snow..."

And more importantly, will she be able to survive the madness long enough to put the pieces together?

    Review:

Faye is being sent to a camp. For reasons she doesn't even know about. When she gets tehre she find its not like your typical summer camp. Can she figure out why before the summer ends?

I'll try so hard not to go all fan-girly on you. But this book caught me so unexpectidly. In the best way possible! So please, please if I go all you know, deal with it this one time? Thanks! On to the actual review, my fellow bloggers.

This novel itself caught be totally off guard! Hell, I thought it was a cliche tale of a girl who goes to camp, camp isn't normal kind of thing. I was so wrong, so wrong. The writing is just like a teen, but still creates something great. It gives the story so much more. The letters to Diane also add to that. I love it!

Faye is just your average fourteen year old girl. She's stubborn and misunderstood like we all are at one point of our life- or still am. Plus so much more. I loved her characters. The other ones fit in well with the story plot, which I might add is fantastic. Benji, or Benjamin is your typical guy the unpopular girl likes. He's strong willed and a gentleman.I liked him as well.

This is a wonderful, mysterious, comical, cutesy type book. If your willing to put aside your initial thoughts and read through, it'll catch you by surprise and make you fall in love with it.

    So that wasn't so fan-girly as I thought it would be. But this is: Go get this book, now. I said now girls and guys! NOW. Don't let me frighten you now, I'm plainly kidding. But seriously, you'll love it. Mhm, just trust me [;

Review: My Soul To Take by Rachel Vincent

    Title: My Soul To Take
    Author: Rachel Vincent
    Publisher: Harlequin Teen
    Pages:

    Rating: 5/5

She doesn't see dead people, but…

She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who'll be next…

    My thoughts:

Kaylee can't see dead people, but she can sense when they're about to die. When that happens, she screams loudly until they do actually die. She can't figure out why she does it, all she knows is that she can't understand the reason behind it. In the captivating novel, we'll find out just that reason....

I've never read anything by Rachel Vincent, all I know is that she doesn't write Young Adult titles. You wouldn't know that with this book, at all. It's a great debut young adult novel. This is an original, thought-out book that anyone will love. There are new aspects you have seen before, swiveled with romance and suspense.

Each of the characters were realistic in many levels. I found them as if they were real people, rather than a fictional character. Each delved into normal teenage-y things, but went even deeper with a deeper secret. I loved that. The relationship between Kaylee and Nash, I have to sadly say, was a tad rushed; but I still loved it otherwise.

In a world of paranormal novels, you'll find werewolfs, vampires, ghosts, even fairies. In this book, you'll find neither of those, instead, you will find something totally different. And Vincent created the story perfectly with something new. And I have to say, I'm a fan of this author now. I just might have to read her adult novels.

Overall, if you're looking for romance, paranormal, or just a book to read on a trip. You're going to love this book as much as I did. I barely found anything wrong with this book, the writing gave great descriptions. A great book, and I can't wait until the next book comes out in January.

I borrow the car again from Grandma and drive out to my hill. I scream I AM A BIG FAT ZERO, plus I AM SWEARING OFF KISSING FOREVER, and I HATE BEING A SECRET SEX FIEND, about sixteen times each. Then I sit very still and watch a hawk swirl over the fields. I have to get a new life before I go crazy.

Sixteen-year-old Morgan lives in a hick town. Her mom was killed in a car accident when she was two, her dad drinks, and her stepmom is a non-entity. Her boyfriend Derek is boring and she can't stop staring at her coworker Rob's cute butt. Then there's the kiss she shared with her neighbor Tessa . . . But when Morgan discovers a devastating secret about the one person she completely trusted, her entire world crashes and she must redefine her life and herself.

    My thoughts:

Morgan has a boyfriend, but doesn't really like him. Her coworker, Rob, is sexy and she can't help herself from liking him and his arse. Then there's this girl, whose rumored to be gay, and she might have an attaction towards her. She tries to figure out who she is as a person as well.

Morgan was a strong willed girl, desperately wanting to get out of her small town. She wants to spread her wings, but she's a little queer. She writes fortunes, and posts them anyone. That quirk is weird, and I like when characters have there own quirks. It adds to that character. The grandma's secret wasn't what I was suspected, and it didn't seem quite lets say, humanly maybe? Oh well.

I'm unsure about this book. I have nothing against gays, or bisexual, but the plot and writing were wired to be annoying. The page splits were fortune cookies, rather than chapter one, etc., etc., etc. I can't really say I liked that type of break. The writing was okay, and I loved it sometimes. The plot was okay, but I wasn't paying attention really.

Overall, this book was okay, but didn't impress me. And I never really caught what the story was really about. But you might like it, or not. Go and read to find out [:I thought this was a novel, but it's a narrative. That could be the reason I didn't understand it or something. Oh well.

Then she comes home to find her parents are forcing her to leave her friends and hometown of Seattle to attend a summer camp, aptly named Camp Milestone. After several failed attempts to change her parents mind Faye finds herself on a plane headed across the country to a camp she has never heard of.

Only, Camp Milestone is no ordinary camp. There are no phones allowed, shabby cabins and only a handful of campers. The only good turn of events is Benji her longtime crush is among the sparsely populated camp. This highlight of her summer is overshadowed by the camps strange and harsh rules given out by the head of the camp Galiana Moore, who seems crazy most of the time, and who unfortunately has taken a liking to Faye. As if things were not bad enough she notices an odd rash that has consumed most of her back from the lighting strike that seems to not only be growing larger but glowing slightly.

"An infant left in the trash to die. A teenage mother who never knew she was pregnant . . .

Before That Morning, these were the words most often used to describe straight-A student and star soccer player Devon Davenport: responsible, hardworking, mature. But all that changes when the police find Devon home sick from school as they investigate the case of an abandoned baby. Soon the connection is made—Devon has just given birth; the baby in the trash is hers. After That Morning, there’s only one way to define Devon: attempted murderer.

And yet gifted author Amy Efaw does the impossible— she turns Devon into an empathetic character, a girl who was in such deep denial that she refused to believe she was pregnant. Through airtight writing and fast-paced, gripping storytelling, Ms. Efaw takes the reader on Devon’s unforgettable journey toward clarity, acceptance, and redemption."

"Fifteen-year-old Mia is not exactly thrilled when she gets the news that her parents are shipping her off to boarding school. It's not like she did anything that bad — all she did was wreck her dad's car and max out her step mum's credit cards. So, off she goes, from Chicago to Bard Academy, an exclusive prep school that treats troubled teenagers with a healthy dose of higher learning and old-fashioned discipline.

But all is not what it seems at this educational institute, and Mia and her classmates soon discover that the teachers are actually ghosts, stuck in limbo, some of them famous authors who died before their time, including Virginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, and Charlotte Bronte. And what's even more disturbing is that not all the ghosts have good intentions. Mia and her friends must stop one evil instructor's plan to bring down the school — and the entire student body with it."

Claire Danvers's college town may be run by vampires but a truce between the living and the dead made things relatively safe. For a while. Now people are turning up dead, a psycho is stalking her, and an ancient bloodsucker has proposed private mentoring. To what end, Claire will find out. And it's giving night school a whole new meaning.

    * This Description is so much better, the one on the book doesn't even state true things. Like she transferred schools, she didn't even consider it!*

    My Thoughts;

This is the third book of the Morganville Vampires' series. The series follows Eve, Shane, Michael, and Claire. Together, they get though everything that happens to them. No matter how hard the task. They always look after each other, and this book of the series is even
    creepier than the last.

This book had it a little slow for me, for some reason I couldn't get into like the past two books. Don't know what went on there, but here's the review review.

I'm finding out about the characters more with this book. You really start to undersatnd why they do things, and the reason behind it. Even their quirks. The last book I told you I liked Ameile. Wrong, she's creepy and I don't like her anymore.

The writing is still same as ever, the plot more enticing. You often find out that there is a lot of mystery. And this is, by far, not a mystery book. I have to add, there's some of sexual humor. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad, because I found it funny. Overall, the plot had me standing on my toes. Waiting for what's going to happen next.

If you read the first two and loved it, you're going to love the next in this series. There are two more books to this series and I'm finding it harder and harder to post a review without giving spoilers o.O.

Claire Danvers has her share of challenges - like being a genius in a school that favors beauty over brains, dealing with the homicidal girls in her down, and above all, finding out that her college town is overrun with vampires. On the up side, she has a great roommate (who tends to disappear at sunup) and a new boyfriend named Shane... whose vampire-hunting dad has called in backup: cycle punks who like the idea of killing just about anything.

Now a fraternity is throwing its annual Dead Girls' Dance and - surprise! - Claire and her equally outcast best friend, Eve, have been invited. When they find out why, all hell is going to break loose. Because this time both the living and the dead are coming out - and everybody's hungry for blood.

    My thoughts:

So I finished a book in less the 12 hours. But, hey, it happens to the best of us. I totally had a reason, though! It was short, okay not that short, but it was suberb good. And i don't even use that word! Anyways.

In this sequel to Glass Houses, there are more characters added in to the original ones. The one I found most interesting this time had to be Amelie. She was icy, yet mother-like. That was a character I just wanted to learn more about. The others, the main characters, still were as good as ever.

Although the last book was good, this one had more action in it which made it better. Is that even possible? Well, it is to me. On any terms, it's getting more creepy each book of the series I read. That's something I love, the anticipation.

Overall, this is a good sequel, and I can't wait to read the third book. And not to mention, the review might be added tomorrow also. I'm finishing them quick, I love them that much [: I kind of went fan-girly on you, and I'm sorry. And I have to get into the groove, as they say, into writing reviews again. I shouldn't take long to read, I forget how to write reviews. Blah!

    BBAW Meme

So, this is a meme created by the people of Blogger Apreciation week. I love surveys, so I thought I post this. It's a reading survey. So you'll learn more from this one, then the last one. Well at least I hope so. Here it goes!

Do you snack while you read?
    Sometimes.

    If so, favorite reading snack?
    I don't know.

Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?
I'm horrified! I do not write in books.

How do you keep your place while reading a book?
I like ribbons as bookmarks, or pictures of my nieces.

Bookmark? Dog-ears?Laying the book flat open?
    Refer to question number 3.
Plus I like laying it flat, but that's only for short breaks.

    Fiction, Non-fiction, or both?
    Fiction, please.

    Hard copy or audiobooks?
    I prefer hard copy.

Are you a person who tends to read to the end of chapters, or are youa ble to put a book down at any point?
Pathetic, but I have to stop at a chapter end. I'm OCD like that.

If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop to look it up right away?
    Psh, no.

    What are you currently reading?
The Dead Girls' Dance by Rachel Caine

What is the last book you bought?
Interview With A Vampire by Anne Rice

Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time or can you read more than one at a time?
I can read more than one at a time, but I prefer one.

Do you have a favorite time of day and/or place to read?
    Nope.

Do you prefer series books or stand alone books?
I like to mix it up, so both.

Is there a specific book or author that you find yourself recommending over and over?
    Nope.

How do you organize your books? (By genre, title, author’s last name, etc.?)
I borrow, so I don't have to organize my books.

Review: Glass Houses by Rachel Caine

    Title: Glass Houses

Just don't stay out after dark.

College freshman Claire Danvers has had enough of her nightmarish dorm situation, where the popular girls never let her forget just where she ranks in the school's social scene: somewhere less than zero.

When Claire heads off-campus, the imposing old house where she finds a room may not be much better. Her new roommates don't show many signs of life. But they'll have Claire's back when the town's deepest secrets come crawling out, hungry for fresh blood.

    Review:

I love this book. I can't say it anymore. Some reviews will say the plot wasn't put together well, or blah blah blah. I couldn't disagree anymore. I found it dark, funny, and full of mystery.

The characters in the book are well created, they felt real. And that's something I look forward into books, I hate when it's just one not rounded character. Shane, Eve, and Michael were all hilarious at times, then serious at others times. Shane was by far my favorite, he was a typical guy who I found funny. The only thing I didn't like about the characters was that Claire was a freshman in college and sixteen. Is that possible?

The writing was okay. I haven't gotten that far review wise with writing, it all looks the same to me. Yes, yes, I know. Anyways. I found the plot good as well.

    I liked the theme that vampires rule a city, and you have to have protection to live there. Well, something around that. I love anything vampires. We all know that. This book is about real vampires, the cross, stake, fire, holy water hating ones. Portrayed evil in this book, but I still prefer the ones that sparkle [;

Overall, I enjoyed this book and loved it. If you want a sort-of light read, with vampires attached. I recommend you read this! I know this review sucks, but I'm out of 'training', per say, but yeah.

    Teaser Tuesday [o7]

This week, I have to schedule a TT a little bit earlier than Tuesday because I need to do something and won't be able to post at all on Tuesday. So, I'm writing this on Saturday. And the book on here may not be the same book I'm reading now because I just started a shortie [; But everyone needs a teaser!

And I'm pretty sure you guys know what to do, so I'm not posting rules.

    PhotoQuote of The Week (1)

So, as I promised last week, I would post rules on how to do this meme. It's really not that hard to follow along with. Here are teh rules:

1.) Go to TinyPic, Photobucket, or Deviant Art.
2.) Type 'photography' in the search box, or cartoons, whatever you want.
3.) However, keep it PG-13 or lower, no need for nasties.
4.) Using the same sites, or Google, type in whatev
er type quotes you want. This can range from music, inspirational, funny, love, life, movie, and TV show quotes. Pick one!
5.) Snap it all together in a post. And put reasons why you chose each if you want to . It's not mandatory. Also, you can add more pictures of quotes if you want. You're not limited.

    That's it! There will be a Mr. Linky as well, you can particpate if you wanna. Or if it's too lame, ha-ha, you don't have to. It's all cool, just keep it to yourself, [;

    Friday Night Cover Wars

It's another round of the Friday Night Cover Wars! This week, we have the upcomiing, most want worthy... The Hollow by Jessica Verday. Okay, so that was my lame attempt at trying to be all boxing/wrestling like. Haha. But seriously, this is a good one! Stay put, I mean it!
On a more serious not, also take a silent moment to remember 9/11. Please and thank you.
    _______________

This, ladies - and gentlemen! - is the cover for the United State's version

Drumroll please. And this, my friends, is the UK version.

    __________

What mighty beautiful covers, this week's a tough one. I have to say. I'm loving the vintage, elegant, grey and white cover of the United Kingdom's book. It's super, duper pretty. I'm loving the font and background on this one.

My opinion on the lonely loser. I still like that one, but I think it's just too much going on. The font is a tad too large for my standards. The girl is very pretty as well, and the necklace is there. But our copy holds the darkness that the book is about as well.

    It was a close race!

    In My Mailbox [13]

In My Mailbox was created by Kristi from The Story Siren, and inspired by Alea at The Book Junkie. Went to the library and picked up four books, three of which are tiny. But seem really good. As for the picture, I was feeling cutesy; so you get a cute picture [:

"Almost-15-year-old Austin Gray is tired of standing at the curb and watching the parade pass her by. Literally. She decides this is the year she’ll ride on the hood of a shiny pickup truck in the annual parade, waving to the crowd and finally showing the town bully that she’s got what it takes to be the Sweetheart of Prosper County.

But far from simply being a beauty contest, becoming Sweetheart involves participation in the Future Farmers of America (FFA), raising an animal, and hunting or fishing. Austin will do almost anything to become Sweetheart, and has the support of her oldest friend, Maribel, her new FFA friends (including the reigning Sweetheart, and a quiet, cute cowboy), an evangelical Elvis impersonator, a mysterious Cajun outcast, and a rooster named Charles Dickens. If only her momma would stop overprotecting her, and start letting Austin live her own life. But Austin can’t move on until Momma moves on, too—and lets the grief of losing Austin’s daddy several years before out into the open."

    Review: Wings by Aprilynne Pike

    Title: Wings
    Author: Aprilynne Pike
    Publisher: HarperTeen
    Pages: 304
    Rating: 3.5/5

"Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things with wide eyes. They were terrifyingly beautiful—too beautiful for words.
Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked almost like wings.
In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever."

    Review:

Okay. Here the school I have been wanting to read this book for so long. So long. But then I saw Miley Cyrus was playing Laurel, before I read the book. I automatically didn't want to read it anymore. So, every time Laurel in the book spoke, I heard Cyrus's twang. Shivers. I should learn if a book turns into a movie, I'll read the book first BEFORE researching the actors. But, eventually I got over it and enjoyed the book.

The characters in the book all had some purpose in the story. I liked Laurel. She was strong though everything. But even stronger with her friends and family. Okay, as we all know, in my reviews I post the boy I favored [; This one was a toughie! But I liked both, haha. The love triangle was enticing.
The paranormal part of this story was totally unexpected. You think that it's automatically about fairies. Which well, it is. But Pike's view of fairies and how they age is marvelous. I love seeing new views of anything paranormal. I give the author props for making it so new.

The writing style was brilliant. I often found myself fully drawn into the book. The author does a wonderful job describing. The plot was very interesting as well. It's visibly seen, but is hidden with the great descriptions! I didn't like the cliffhanger, but who does?

Overall, I found this book creative, enticing, full of mythical creatures, and most of all... Enjoyable. Looking forward to reading the next book in the sequel, which is released in the fall. Look for it! [:

    Waiting on Wednesday [o6]

Waiting on Wednesday allows you to show others what books you can't wait to read at any given time. This week I have only two, when it's usually one. But, oh well, we could all use a change. Plus these are really good books. I'm looking forward to reading them, but there they are...

    New Meme!

So! I was thinking of new memes that I could use for my blog. Since I really don't have anything, well, unique about my blog. Plenty of others do, but me? I don't. So let's get down to it.

Have you noticed how I put a picture, then a quote underneath on my IMM posts, or updates? Well I'm going to make it a permant thing, along with staying like so with my IMM and updates. But each week, I'll post a picture that I found adorable. It could be photography, cartoons, or even a landscape. Then I'll also post a quote that has inspired me that week. I'll start that next week.

I'm thinking of letting this be called: 'Photoquote of The Week'. Does that sound good? It's has a photo and quote combined in the word photography. Sort of nifty if I don't say so myself. I know that this doesn't have anything to do with books, but... it's something that interests me.

On another note, I'm starting to host interviews with authors. I have two already set up, well at least I think so. Anyways! They're going to be held any Sunday of the month and will be called 'Sunday's Vintage Darlings'. Cute, huh? This will start the 27th of this month, the first. Sunday's Vintage Darlings.

Alright, I'm off to do some school work for the day! Catch ya later, dudes! I had to, :P Oh, and I will post linky's with the second new meme, more details on how to with my first post :]

Review: Stake That! by Mari Mancusi

    Title: Stake That!
    Author: Mari Mancusi
    Publisher: Berkley Publishing
    Pages: 275
    Rating: 3.5/5

"Sisters. They'll swipe your clothes, your boyfriends, your destiny. But it wasn't exactly Rayne's twin Sunny's fault. Magnus, a vamp hottie and coven leader, mistook Sunny for Rayne last month and bit her instead. Now they're doing the inter-species dating thing.

Turns out that for every generation, there's a Vampire Slayer-and this time around, it just happens to be Rayne MacDonald. Her first mission: infiltrate a seedy vamp bar downtown and expose its vampire owner for purposely spreading a blood disease he created himself-a task almost harder than passing trig.

After going it alone once, Rayne realizes she needs help. So Magnus sends his sexy Goth buddy Jareth to go undercover with her. And, frankly, Rayne wouldn't mind going under the covers with him. Maybe fate doesn't bite after all..."

    Review:

Rayne has done everything and anything to become a vampire once and for all. On the day she's supposed to be turned, her soul-mate bite her twin sister rather than her. After this all, she's not so happy about it. On top of all that, she's been told she's a vampire slayer. Unbelievable, huh? Follow Rayne as she files through her first task.

I saw this book at the library and jumped, because I was looking forward to reading the second book. Just today, I realized it was corrupted. I ended up reading half of the book upside down. Flipping pages to the right rather than the left. Don't forget to add in the flipped pages were repeated when the book turned to normal again. Bleck, but this didn't keep me from reading.

The writing is a kind that's sort of new to me. It's written as blog posts, in teen language. Not saying that it was a bad thing, but it sort of turned me off from the book. I enjoyed it otherwise!

The old characters from the old book are back, along with some new ones. I have a new crush, and that it Jareth. Mmm, British blondish yummiest. Ahem, excuse me. Anyways, I like how he was brooding, almost hating the world, then you find out he's as soft as a marshmallow inside. I love that!
Overall, I enjoyed this sequel and I'm on the move to find the third book. I think you'll like this book, if you're a Twilight fan!

    Review: Immortal by Gillian Shields

"Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies, housed in a Gothic mansion on the bleak northern moors, is elite, expensive, and unwelcoming. When Evie Johnson is torn away from her home by the sea to become the newest scholarship student, she is more isolated than she could have dreamed. Strict teachers, snobbish students, and the oppressive atmosphere of Wyldcliffe leave Evie drowning in loneliness.

Evie's only lifeline is Sebastian, a rebellious, mocking, dangerously attractive young man she meets by chance. As Evie's feelings for Sebastian grow with each secret meeting, she starts to fear that he is hiding something about his past. And she is haunted by glimpses of a strange, ghostly girl—a girl who is so eerily like Evie, she could be a sister. Evie is slowly drawn into a tangled web of past and present that she cannot control. And as the extraordinary, elemental forces of Wyldcliffe rise up like the mighty sea, Evie is faced with an astounding truth about Sebastian, and her own incredible fate."
    Review:
I've heard a lot of mixed reviews from this book- some good and most bad. I've got to think differently about it.

I loved the theme in this book. It's a mumble jumble of different things, but I think they fit together well. The witch and magic aspect, the love aspect, everything. Quite intersting. I loved the journal entries from Agnes were amazing. I love any book that has diary/journal entries. It brings more to the book.

Most of the characters were snobby, except for a few of them. The teachers creeped me out! They were beyond creepy, and too strict also. Okay, okay, I have this problem with liking guy chararcters in books - kill me for all I care, heh- but I liked Sebastian. Maybe it was the name, but still. His character fancisated me. The main character was a bit whiny and unlistening brat. Don't get me wrong, I liked her at times, but seriously!

The writing and plot were slightly good in my opinion. The setting of Wydcliffe was Gothic and plain out creepy. I'd be one mad chick if I were sent there, I'd die. I also have one complaint, was this put in modern times or the Gothic times - I couldn't tell otherwise. Other than that, I liked the creepy tone it had. Oh, and I liked how the cover was portrayed throighout the book, you don't get that very often.

Overall, you'll know really quickly if you do or don't like this book. On my terms, I liked it. Not loved it, but I liked it. It was something different than the teen crazed issues I always read about.
